While I wouldn't say he animation in Transformers Prime is quite as terrific in Star Wars: The Clone Wars (the current gold standard for TV CGI animation), it's worth noting that Transformers Prime is still getting started and Clone Wars itself didn't look nearly as good in its first season as it does now. And as expected, they deliver big time, with the first-ever Blu-ray set for a Transformers animated series. Having already given fans lovingly made DVD sets for many of the older Transformers series, including the original and Beast Wars, you knew Transformers Prime was in good hands with Shout! Factory. And the first season ends with the aforementioned Unicron showing up in a very clever, different take on the story first told in Transformers: The Movie, as the Optimus Prime / Megatron dynamic takes center stage. This is a show that has actual depth and consequences – Yes, Transformers can and do die. There are some episodes that fall flat, but the strengths outweigh the weaknesses by a long shot. Let Bumblebee talk, damn it! With very well done action and serious-minded storylines, Transformers Prime is a very cool addition to the Transformers franchise. My biggest complaint is the lack of a voice actor as Bumblebee, as the Prime version incorporates the non-speaking version from the feature films, which is just silly and frustrating. The rest of the voice cast are all very good, and there is some very fun casting at work here, including Dwayne Johnson as Cliffjumper, Firefly alums Adam Baldwin and Gina Torres as Decepticons Breakdown and Airachnid and Fringe's John Noble as Unicron.

But here, Cullen and Welker get to really show what they can do when given far more interesting dialogue and situations to play out between Prime and Megatron, as the series delves into the specifics about their shared history. I have the same nostalgic love for the original series as any other kid who grew up watching it in the 80s, but it doesn't really hold up. It's also wonderful to have Frank Welker reprise his role from the original Transformers series as Megatron. Jeffrey Combs is another standout as Ratchet, and in a show that knows its adult audience, I loved the Re-Animator reference when Ratchet develops a glowing, green serum in one episode. In general, the Transformers themselves shine here, with Peter Cullen bringing his usual gravity to Optimus Prime, while given much more layers to play with the character than ever before. The Spike/Sam Witwicky substitute, Jack ( Josh Keaton), is pretty likable though and I especially like his friendship with Arcee (Sumalee Montano) - with the somewhat token female Autobot herself much more interesting and often just plain awesome than in any previous Transformers incarnation. And Raf (Andy Pessoa), the boy genius, is a bit of a cliche. They definitely feel like they are the supporting characters to the Autobots and not vice versa at least (there are episodes the human characters barely appear in), but there are also certainly times when Miko (voiced by Tania Gunadi) in particular can grate, with her overly enthusiastic, overly spunky, mannered personality. The three kids the Autobots team with are a mixed bag. While humans are still present (more on that below), the robots are the stars of this series, with most episodes and storylines focusing on them, and building them into fully formed, relatable characters in a way the films never have. The Fringe creators/Star Trek writers wrote the first two Transformers films, but in many ways, Prime feels like the Transformers project they'd rather have made from the start. Transformers Prime's executive producers include Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. With the the aid of three newfound young allies, the Autobots find themselves in a new war against their enemies. A period of relative peace doesn't last, as the Decepticons return, using "Dark Energon" for some very nefarious, unsettling purposes. With the backstory of the Transformers well known at this point, Prime wisely jumps right in with a small, core group of Autobots already living on Earth. But guess what? The current Transformers animated series is a standout, taking the over a quarter of a century history of the franchise and blending different aspects along with brand new elements to make for a very satisfying new iteration of the Robots in Disguise - one that ultimately could become the best Transformers series yet.

Add in many different comic book iterations and a hugely successful movie trilogy (with more films on the way) and you have a whole lot of different versions that pre-date Transformers Prime. Including several Japanese-only shows, there have been over a dozen Transformers animated series at this point.
