One night, the two were hanging out and Laird was engrossed in one of his favorite TV shows. The secret origin of the Turtles dates back to the early 1980s in Northampton, Mass., as two artist friends, Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, would often get together and draw comics. It’s a good question, and ultimately, a billion-dollar one. Seriously, why are they teenage mutant turtles? Here, we answer six burning questions behind the “Turtles” franchise. The newest iteration is Friday’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” a live-action reboot produced by Michael Bay and starring Megan Fox as the crime fighters’ buddy, April O’Neil. It’s astonishing that what should have been a minor pop-culture curiosity has enjoyed such longevity and continues to be reinvented.
But this year marks the 30th anniversary of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. With all that pizza they eat, you’d have thought they’d be dead from heart attacks by now. Raphael is painted in a different shade of green compared to the other four Turtles, and does not have the spots on his skin as seen in the movie stills and images we’ve seen. They are made of hard plastic and cannot break unless force is applied. His sais are the same, but are different on the back of the packaging as described in detail above. He also has a red bandana that’s sculpted around his face and hangs down the back. On his left knee there’s a red knee guard that’s painted all the way around and the right knee has a white one painted all the way around. He has a brown skirt sculpted around his hips that’s nicely detailed, bandages and around his wrists, biceps, legs and feet. The downside is using the straps as a sheath can stretch it out too much and could damage the straps. His shell and chest have a strap sculpted around and they can be used as a sheath to hold the sais. Raphael features an all new sculpt with texture sculpted on his skin. The final product is missing the eye balls and painted white instead, missing black wash on his chest, missing the red belt, and his sais are painted all in grey. It shows Raphael with eye balls, black paint washed on his chest, a red belt under the brown skirt, his sais painted with a red handle and silver blades, and the colors of his bandana’s are a darker red compared to the final product.
On the back of the packaging it shows Raphael painted slightly different than the final product. But there is red around the image so it’s possible that the red bandana blended in too much with the background, so they had to change the color of the bandana just to make it show on the packaging. On the front of the packaging, Raphael is shown with a purple bandana while it’s well known he has a red one. On each of the front packaging it is different for the four Turtles as it shows the other three Turtles on the card that are not the figure inside the package, and also shows the Turtle on the inside bubble just below his brothers. The packaging is a standard blister card with an image of the three other Turtles on the front, and Raphael pictured inside the bubble.
